Betoota Rugby Club is one of the oldest rugby clubs in Australia being a foundation member of the Channel Country Rugby Football Union formed in 1861.
The club takes its name from a Central Queensland icon, the Muttaburrasaurus. The Muttaburrasaurus was a genus of herbivorous ornithopod dinosaur, which lived in what is now northeastern Australia sometime between 112 and 99.6 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous Period.
In the 1850s, the largest and most intact example of this majestic beast of yesteryear was dug up near Muttaburra, a satellite city of Longreach, which is how it got its name.
Nowadays, the legacy of the Muttaburrasaurus lives on in our town's rugby union team.
